As Donald Trump, the Republican “victorious” president-elect, announced his win over Democratic contender and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, Pakistan offered its congratulations on his landmark second term.
Having served as president from 2017 to 2021, Trump is set to return to the White House after defeating Harris, becoming the 47th president of the United States.
Amid worldwide congratulations for the winning Republican candidate, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also extended his congratulations on this “historic victory for a second term,” addressing Trump as president-elect.
“I look forward to working closely with the incoming Administration to further strengthen and broaden the Pakistan-U.S. partnership @realDonaldTrump,” PM Shehbaz stated in his message.
Pakistan extends congratulations to Donald Trump on winning his second presidential term. PM Shehbaz’s well-wishes for Trump, who is expected to resume office in Washington, followed the broadcast of Trump’s victory speech to viewers globally.
While the complete results of the U.S. presidential polls are still awaited, several U.S. media outlets, including Fox News, report Trump’s lead in this historic race, which saw Kamala Harris, a Black and South Asian woman, competing against a former white president.
The Democratic candidate is currently trailing with 226 electoral votes, while Trump leads with 277, as per American media reports.
Additionally, Omar Ayub Khan, the Leader of the Opposition in Pakistan’s National Assembly and a PTI lawmaker, also extended congratulations to Trump and his VP-elect, JD Vance, for their electoral success.
“It is hoped this new team will enhance relations between the people of Pakistan and the United States,” Omar Ayub wrote on X.
Pakistan congratulates Donald Trump on his second presidential victory. The PTI also used its official X handle to acknowledge the Republican candidate’s win, remarking that the American public’s “mandate has been respected.”
The PTI statement highlighted a “stark contrast to Pakistan, where the public mandate was blatantly disregarded,” as the party continues its struggle amid the detention of its founder, Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned for over a year due to multiple convictions.
Imran Khan’s rapport with Trump’s administration during his term as Pakistan’s prime minister is seen as one reason PTI supporters view Trump’s return to power as a possible diplomatic advantage.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Peoples Party Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari also congratulated Trump and his team, celebrating their “election and historic comeback” and “resounding victory.”
Labeling the Republican victory “anti-war,” Bilawal expressed hope that the new administration would prioritize peace and help end the cycle of ongoing global conflicts.
