ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Russia solidified their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations on Thursday by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at expanding cooperation across various sectors.
The agreement was signed by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, paving the way for enhanced collaboration in key areas such as trade, energy, connectivity, and defense.
This signing followed a meeting between Mr. Overchuk and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during which both sides emphasized the significance of broadening their relationship in multiple domains.
Mr. Sharif reiterated the government’s position that bolstering ties with Russia is a priority for Pakistan’s foreign policy. He expressed anticipation for the visit of Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to Islamabad next month for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s Council of Heads of Governments meeting.
Trade and Energy Cooperation
The MoU builds upon discussions held the previous day at Pakistan’s Foreign Office, where delegation-level talks focused on enhancing trade and addressing logistical challenges posed by international sanctions on Russia.
One key outcome from these discussions was Russia’s proposal to explore a free trade agreement between Pakistan and the Eurasian Economic Union.
Additionally, the discussions during Mr. Overchuk’s visit included cultural and educational exchanges, with both countries aiming to strengthen people-to-people connections.
