Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed relevant authorities to reinstate the Green Channel program to assist overseas Pakistanis.
Speaking at the Overseas Pakistanis Global Foundation Convention, the prime minister expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Pakistani diaspora for their continuous support in the nation’s progress and development.
PM Shehbaz directed the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development to restore the Green Channel and established a body to recognize outstanding members of the diaspora who have contributed to Pakistan’s growth.
He acknowledged the vital role of overseas Pakistanis as ambassadors of Pakistan around the world.
The Prime Minister assured the audience that the government remains committed to resolving the challenges faced by overseas Pakistanis. “We will work tirelessly to address your concerns and ensure your voices are heard at the highest levels,” he stated.
PM Shehbaz recalled the Green Channel as an innovative initiative launched by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to simplify immigration and customs procedures for overseas Pakistanis. He assured that the program would soon be revived and emphasized the importance of the diaspora’s involvement in ensuring its success.
PM Shehbaz expressed deep respect for overseas Pakistanis, commending their contributions to various sectors abroad. “Your hard work, honesty, and commitment are greatly appreciated, and you play a key role in our national development,” he said.
He acknowledged the significant contributions of overseas Pakistanis in strengthening the economy, particularly through remittances. He highlighted that the country had seen a 30% increase in remittances, directly benefiting Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves. “Your efforts have played a pivotal role in enhancing the country’s economic standing,” he added.
The Prime Minister also praised the returnees who, after gaining international expertise, are now playing a crucial role in Pakistan’s economic growth as investors, entrepreneurs, and experts. “Many of you have returned with valuable skills, and your ongoing investments in the economy are essential to our future,” he noted.
In line with his government’s commitment to supporting the diaspora, PM Shehbaz discussed a new department established in Punjab to address issues faced by overseas Pakistanis. The department has been instrumental in reclaiming properties from land grabbers, particularly those belonging to the diaspora. Under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, this initiative has been crucial in providing support to overseas Pakistanis.
PM Shehbaz also lauded Ustad Rafaqat Ali Khan for his emotional tribute to the armed forces during the convention, thanking him for his contribution to the cultural event.
Regarding security, the Prime Minister spoke about Pakistan’s efforts to combat terrorism, acknowledging the sacrifices made in the fight. “By 2018, terrorism had nearly been eradicated, but recent challenges arose from those who allowed terrorists to return. In recent operations in Balochistan, 23 terrorists were eliminated, and 18 brave soldiers sacrificed their lives in defense of the nation,” he said, highlighting the determination of Pakistan’s armed forces in the ongoing fight against terrorism.
