Punjab Police thwarted another militant attack on the Jhangi (Hazrat Umar Farooq) checkpoint in Taunsa Sharif late Friday night, forcing the assailants to retreat, according to 24NewsHD TV channel.
A police spokesman revealed that 15 to 20 militants, equipped with advanced weapons, including rocket launchers and hand grenades, launched an assault on the checkpoint from multiple directions under the cover of darkness.
The operation was led by RPO Dera Ghazi Khan Captain (r) Sajjad Hassan Khan Manj, with DPO Dera Ghazi Khan Syed Ali accompanying him. Several militants were reportedly killed during the exchange, and police immediately initiated a search operation in the area.
The spokesman noted that this attack follows a similar attempt on the night of May 1-2, 2024, when militants tried but failed to breach the checkpoint. This incident marks the 18th militant attack on border checkpoints in the past two years, all of which have been successfully foiled by provincial police.
Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Usman Anwar commended the preparedness and vigilance of the police, ensuring that the militants did not achieve their goal. He confirmed that all officers involved in the attack remained unharmed and their morale remains high.
On the orders of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, security at the Jhangi checkpoint has been further strengthened, with additional personnel and advanced weaponry deployed. IGP Dr. Usman Anwar praised the police force for their swift and effective response in preventing the attack.
