Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was arrested by Rawalpindi police on Wednesday in connection with the party’s protest on September 28, 2024.
The arrest occurred at Adiala Jail, where Khan is currently being held. It followed the formal registration of charges against him at the New Town police station.
Khan faces multiple charges under Sections 7 ATA, 21-I ATA, and various provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code, including Sections 353, 186, 285, 286, 148, 149, 427, 109, and 188, related to his alleged involvement in the violent PTI protest.
Already incarcerated in a separate case, Khan is set to appear in court for a physical remand hearing tomorrow, where a decision will be made regarding his custody for further investigation.
This arrest follows a morning ruling by the Islamabad High Court, which granted Khan bail in the Toshakhana case, adding to the complexities of his ongoing legal challenges.
Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb granted the bail, with Defence Lawyer Salman Safdar noting that the matter had shifted to the FIA after the case left the NAB. The FIA prosecutor mentioned that the Customs officers involved in the mishandling of the case did not face criminal charges.
The court ordered Khan to submit two bonds of Rs1 million each and to appear in the trial court following his release. It also warned that the bail could be revoked if he fails to cooperate during the trial.
