LAHORE: Hundreds of government employees gathered in front of the Punjab Civil Secretariat on Thursday to protest the government’s decision to reduce pensions.
Employees from various sectors, including school and college teachers, voiced their objections to cuts in pension, gratuity, and leave encashment.
The protest was led by Ch Mukhtar Gujjar, Chairman of the All Government Employees Grand Alliance Punjab (AGEGA) Lahore Division.
Addressing the crowd, the organizers accused the government of committing an economic injustice against millions of teachers and employees by issuing notifications to reduce pensions, gratuity, and leave encashment.
“The ruling party has increased their own benefits nine times, yet instead of offering anything to teachers and employees, they are cutting the benefits we’ve already received by 50 percent,” the protesters stated.
They emphasized that teachers and employees were the backbone of Punjab’s development but were being subjected to economic exploitation.
Speakers warned that the cuts would leave teachers and employees begging after retirement.
“If the government does not revoke these notifications immediately, we will launch sit-ins across Punjab on national highways,” the organizers threatened.
