Two Militants Linked to Kurram DC Attack ‘Captured’

Two Militants Arrested in Connection with Kurram DC Attack

PESHAWAR: Two militants involved in the attack on the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Kurram have been arrested, reported citing sources.

According to officials, the militants were apprehended during a crackdown in Kurram. They have been named in the FIR related to the firing incident targeting the DC.

Earlier, the Additional Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa issued a notification imposing Section 144 in Kurram district for two months due to concerns about terrorist attempts to disrupt the peace agreement in the region.

The notification outlined a crackdown on those destabilizing peace in Kurram and imposed a ban on public gatherings and weapon displays along the main highway.

Details of the Attack on Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud

Sources revealed that the militants involved in the attack on Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud have been identified. In addition to five suspects, other facilitators will also face charges, with arrests planned once the case is registered.

The attack on a convoy carrying essential supplies, including food and medicine, occurred amid fragile peace talks. Militants fired on the deputy commissioner’s vehicle and other official cars, injuring Mehsud, a police officer, and a Frontier Corps (FC) personnel.

The attack took place around 10:35 am in the Bagan area of Lower Kurram, as local authorities negotiated with militants to clear the road for the convoy. Mehsud was rushed to Lower Alizai Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Kurram Peace Agreement and Ongoing Protests

Despite the peace deal signed during the Grand Jirga, which aimed to normalize the situation in Kurram, violence erupted again after the attack. The agreement, which took effect on January 4, includes the demolition of bunkers and the collection of arms within 15 days.

However, protests continue in Parachinar and Baggan, with sit-ins demanding the opening of all roads, including the main highway, and the implementation of the peace agreement. Protesters in Baggan also demand compensation for the destruction of property in Baggan Bazaar.

The three-week-long Grand Jirga concluded with both parties agreeing to abide by the decisions of the Apex Committee to bring stability to the region.
