United Nations special rapporteurs have raised alarm over the recent militant attacks on girls’ schools in Pakistan, urging the government to protect the fundamental right of women and girls to receive a safe and secure education.
“We are deeply concerned about the ongoing attacks on girls’ schools by groups opposed to women’s and girls’ education. While all attacks on schools are deplorable, those specifically targeting girls’ schools further discourage women and girls from pursuing education, reinforcing discrimination and societal inequalities,” stated Farida Shaheed, Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education; Reem Alsalem, Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls; and Laura Nyirinkindi, Chair-Rapporteur of the Working Group on Discrimination Against Women and Girls, in a letter to the Pakistani government.
