Bluesky Surpasses 20 Million Users, Triples Growth in Three Months

Bluesky, the decentralized social media platform, has reached a significant milestone, surpassing 20 million users just three months after its user base stood at 7 million.

This rapid growth reflects Bluesky’s rising momentum, with the platform gaining 5 million users in under a week, up from 15 million the previous week. In just three months, its user base has nearly tripled, signaling its increasing appeal in the competitive social media landscape.

Bluesky’s expansion has been remarkably swift, with the platform seeing days where up to one million users joined in just 24 hours. By comparison, Meta’s Threads app, which recently hit 275 million monthly active users, has maintained a similar daily sign-up pace over three months, according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri. Despite its growth, Bluesky remains much smaller than platforms like Threads and X.

The platform’s dominance in app store rankings further underscores its popularity. Bluesky has held the top spot on Apple’s App Store for six consecutive days and led the non-gaming category on Google Play for four days. Meanwhile, Threads currently ranks second in the App Store.

Bluesky’s surge in users has been partially driven by dissatisfaction with X, formerly Twitter. The platform saw a spike in traffic on November 7, the day after the U.S. presidential election, as discontented X users sought alternatives or deactivated their accounts.

Bluesky’s privacy-focused policies and user-first approach have also contributed to its appeal. The platform has pledged not to use user content for training generative AI models, a practice allowed by X, and CEO Jay Graber has confirmed that Bluesky will remain free of intrusive ads. This sets it apart from Threads, which plans to introduce ads in January 2024.

With its decentralized structure and commitment to privacy, Bluesky is carving out a unique position in the social media world, attracting users seeking alternatives to mainstream platforms like X and Threads.
