Federal government acknowledges blocking X

Parliamentary Secretary Sajid Mehdi confirmed the government’s action in blocking the social media platform X during a National Assembly session.

He mentioned that Pakistan is one of the few countries closely monitoring fake news and revealed that 86,000 SIM cards had been blocked due to anti-state activities.

Mehdi further stated that the Electronic Crimes Act would be amended soon, and a task force had been established by the Prime Minister to tackle the issue.

Member of Parliament Asia Naz Tanoli submitted a notice urging immediate measures to curb the spread of fake news, stressing the harm it causes and calling for preventive actions.

In reply, Mehdi declared fake news a national security threat and highlighted the government’s efforts, including blocking Twitter and addressing gaps in the Electronic Crimes Act 2016.

Member of Parliament Nuzhat Sadiq also condemned fake news for damaging the country’s reputation and institutions, urging prompt action.
