Google has reportedly urged the U.S. government to terminate Microsoft’s exclusive deal to host OpenAI’s technology on its cloud servers, according to a report by The Information on Tuesday.
This development emerged after the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) inquired about Microsoft’s business practices as part of a wider investigation, the report stated, citing a source directly involved in the discussions.
Tech competitors like Google and Amazon, which also offer cloud services, have expressed interest in hosting OpenAI’s models. This would allow their cloud customers to access OpenAI’s technology without relying on Microsoft’s servers, the report added.

The report noted that customers purchasing OpenAI’s technology through Microsoft might face additional charges if they don’t already use Microsoft’s servers for their operations.
Google and other rivals argue that these added costs would negatively impact customers.
While Google declined to comment on the report, Microsoft, OpenAI, and the FTC have yet to respond to Reuters’ requests for comments.
