Government issues warning against using VPNs and AI chatbots like ChatGPT-4, Gemini.

The National Telecom and Information Technology Security Board (NTISB) has issued an urgent advisory alerting users to the growing threat of cyber attacks in Pakistan.

The advisory raises concerns over the use of VPNs, AI tools, and suspicious web browser extensions, urging citizens to be cautious.

According to the NTISB, a new wave of cyber attacks has emerged, with hackers targeting personal and sensitive data. Browser extensions, which are widely used, have been flagged as a major tool for data theft. Hackers can exploit these extensions to steal login credentials from social media platforms like Facebook and online banking websites.

The advisory has highlighted 16 commonly used browser extensions, including AI-powered tools like ChatGPT-4 and Gemini for Chrome, and labeled them as potentially hazardous. Free VPNs and unverified AI chatbots are also included in the list of suspicious software.

Key recommendations include:

  • Avoid using free or unverified browser extensions and VPNs.
  • Install only trusted, reputable browser extensions and keep them updated.
  • Use licensed antivirus software to enhance security.

The NTISB emphasized the need for users to remain vigilant and opt for safer alternatives to protect their personal information. The advisory also cautions that without preventive measures, hackers could exploit vulnerabilities to gain access to sensitive data through phishing and compromised software.
