Ahead of the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6, Tajikistan has imposed a ban on the popular Rockstar Games franchise, citing concerns over its “negative influence” on young people. The decision, which also includes the ban of Counter-Strike, follows long-standing criticisms of the series, with detractors accusing Rockstar Games of promoting violence and criminal behavior through gameplay.
In the Grand Theft Auto series, players are often tasked with engaging in illegal activities such as drug dealing, robbery, and violent acts, including interactions with sex workers and visiting strip clubs—elements that have drawn sharp condemnation from activists. Tajikistan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs took to Telegram to announce the ban, explaining that these games “encourage crime” and have a harmful impact on young players, potentially leading them to commit illegal acts. The country also indicated that law enforcement would begin raiding stores selling these games.
Despite the controversy, Rockstar Games is pressing forward with the release of GTA 6, which is scheduled for Fall 2025. The game’s trailer, released in December 2023, features a new setting in the fictional Vice City, echoing the vibes of Miami, and introduces a female protagonist, Lucia, marking a milestone for the series.
While some see these games as merely entertainment, others argue that their graphic content may blur the lines between fantasy and reality, especially for impressionable younger audiences. The debate surrounding the Grand Theft Auto series continues to raise questions about the influence of violent video games on society, with different countries taking varying stances on their regulation.
