Harmony OS: Huawei Aims for 100,000 Apps on Its Android Competitor Within a Year

Huawei Sets Ambitious Goal of 100,000 Apps for Harmony OS Within a Year

Huawei aims to have 100,000 apps on its Harmony OS within the next 6 to 12 months, according to Chairman Xu Zhijun. Although the company currently offers over 15,000 apps that address basic consumer needs, Xu emphasized the importance of adding more personalized and specialized apps to fully mature the ecosystem.

Speaking at a conference on Saturday, Xu explained that for Harmony to effectively meet consumer demands, reaching 100,000 apps is crucial. This target reflects the urgency of developing home-grown technologies as China navigates rising tensions with the U.S., especially in trade and technology sectors under President-elect Donald Trump.

Launched five years ago after U.S. sanctions cut off Huawei’s access to Google’s Android, Harmony OS was designed to reduce dependency on external platforms. The company, based in Shenzhen, has since created an open-source version of the system.

Xu acknowledged that the development of Harmony OS was accelerated due to the U.S. sanctions, but stressed that the system’s value hinges on its adoption. “No matter how advanced an operating system is, it’s useless if no one uses it,” he stated.

Encouraging developers to contribute to the ecosystem, Xu also urged government agencies, state companies, and social organizations to adopt Harmony OS. He called for patience as the system continues to mature, adding, “The more people use it, the faster it will improve.”

Huawei first unveiled Harmony OS in August 2019, following its inclusion in a U.S. trade blacklist over alleged security concerns, which Huawei has consistently denied. “There’s no turning back on this path,” Xu said. “Huawei will continue investing in the Harmony ecosystem, determined to turn the impossible into reality.”
