Meta to introduce ad-free subscription option for Facebook and Instagram

Meta, headquartered in Menlo Park, California, announced it is introducing a new ad-free subscription model for Facebook and Instagram in response to EU regulators’ requests.

The company revealed plans to significantly reduce the cost of its ad-free subscription, giving users in the EU an alternative way to access Facebook and Instagram without ads. This option will feature less personalized advertising by using fewer data points for ad targeting, which may result in ads that are less aligned with individual interests.

Meta emphasized that these changes go beyond the legal requirements set by EU regulators.

Research shows that both users and businesses prefer personalized ads, as they support job creation, economic growth, and free access to online services. Meta reiterated its belief that personalized advertising is crucial to the ad-supported internet model that provides free services to millions of EU residents and billions globally. The company also expressed its commitment to advocating for regulations that allow responsible use of personalized advertising while maintaining the quality of free services people expect.
