Last Supermoon of 2024 to Illuminate Pakistan’s Skies Tonight at 2:28 AM
The last supermoon of 2024 will grace Pakistan’s skies tonight, peaking at 2:28 AM, according to renowned astronomer Dr. Javed Iqbal.
What is a Supermoon?
Dr. Iqbal explains that a supermoon occurs when the Moon comes closest to Earth in its elliptical orbit. This proximity makes it appear significantly larger and brighter. At its closest approach, the distance between Earth and the Moon reduces to 360,378 km, compared to the average 384,400 km. This results in the Moon appearing 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual.
A Double Celestial Delight
This rare supermoon coincides with a spectacular meteor shower this weekend. The American Meteor Society reports that the Moon will reach its peak brightness at 2:29 AM on Saturday, positioned roughly 225,000 miles from Earth. Simultaneously, numerous meteorites will light up the sky, offering an unforgettable cosmic display.
The combined brilliance of the supermoon and the meteor shower promises an extraordinary celestial event not to be missed.
