WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a vibrant new feature that will bring themed icons to contacts and group chats, replacing the dull, neutral grey icons currently in use. This update will give users a more visually engaging experience, making it easier to identify contacts and groups at a glance.
Currently, the plain grey icons are used for contacts, groups, and communities without profile photos, providing a uniform appearance but making it harder to distinguish between them. According to WABetaInfo, the new feature will introduce colorful, themed icons that will enhance visual recognition of contacts and groups.
The concept is similar to the color-coded icons seen in Android’s stock address book, where each contact is assigned a unique color. For contacts without a profile photo or those who have chosen to keep it private, WhatsApp will display a distinctive themed icon, featuring unique color schemes to differentiate them, even if they have the same name.
Group chats and communities will also benefit from this update, with themed icons helping users identify groups that lack a custom image or have similar names. These new icons will use distinct colors and designs, making it easier for users to recognize groups without needing to open each chat.
Currently in development, this feature is available for testing by beta users in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android (version 2.24.24.12), which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.
