WhatsApp is set to roll out the familiar “three dots” typing indicator, which alerts users when someone is typing during a conversation.
This new feature, known as “Typing Indicators,” is now available globally on both Android and iOS devices.
In a statement released on December 5, WhatsApp explained, “When a participant begins typing in a one-on-one or group chat, a visual ‘…’ will appear at the bottom of the chat, along with their profile picture, helping to identify active contributors in the conversation.”
The feature is designed to improve real-time engagement on WhatsApp, with the three-dot indicator visible in both group and individual chats.
It appears to be enabled by default for all users, though it’s unclear whether there will be an option to disable it. The typing indicator has been a staple feature of Apple’s iMessage for some time.
As of 2024, a report by the World Population Review noted that there are 52.3 million WhatsApp users in Pakistan. WhatsApp has maintained its popularity in the region by regularly introducing new features to improve the user experience.
In addition to the typing indicator, WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature allowing users to scan QR codes to access and join channels. Last month, it also launched a ‘Drafts Indicator’ to help users find and complete unfinished messages.
