WhatsApp Relocates Operations from Pakistan Amid Internet Slowdown
ISLAMABAD: WhatsApp, one of the most widely used instant messaging platforms, has relocated its session server routing outside Pakistan due to recent internet disruptions, as revealed in official documents.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) stated that WhatsApp’s decision to shift its Content Delivery Network (CDN) abroad has caused service issues, with many users struggling to connect and maintain communication.
Internet Services See Partial Improvement
The PTA reported improvements in internet services across fixed-line and mobile networks in Pakistan. Fixed-line internet services have improved by two tiers over the past month, placing Pakistan 139th in global fixed-line internet speed rankings.
Mobile internet services have also improved by three tiers, with Pakistan now ranked 97th globally for mobile internet speed. However, despite these upgrades, slow internet continues to hinder businesses and users.
Starlink Licensing Talks in Progress
The PTA confirmed ongoing discussions with Starlink regarding a license for satellite services in Pakistan. The process is still in its initial stages, with the PTA reviewing technical requirements and the National Space Agency evaluating the proposal under the national space policy.
Key considerations, including bandwidth, uplinking, and gateways, are being assessed before granting regulatory approval. This evaluation process is standard for all foreign satellite service providers.
The internet slowdown remains a critical issue, prompting businesses like WhatsApp to adjust their operations and raising concerns about connectivity in the country.
