One of the strongest examples of the saying, “People are enemies of what they do not know!” is undoubtedly the case of Fethullah Gülen Hocaefendi and the experiences he has faced. Much like during the February 28 process when he was tried with the death penalty, today, efforts continue to portray him as an enemy through negative propaganda.
Those unfamiliar with Hocaefendi, who didn’t understand his ideas or the goals he pursued, fell victim to ignorance and manipulative propaganda. However, those who truly knew him and appreciated his values understood that his sole aim was to raise good, morally grounded individuals. Those who witnessed his sincerity, lack of personal gain, and dedication to serving humanity believed in this noble cause, stood by him, and followed his path.
The Hizmet Movement, founded on his belief that “A better world; a more peaceful and prosperous world is possible,” has always aimed at benefiting humanity rather than engaging in any illegal activity or seeking control of institutions.
As a preacher, writer, and founder of the Hizmet Movement, Fethullah Gülen has been a public figure since the age of 16. Throughout his life, he has never encouraged deviant behavior, violence, criminal activity, or any form of abuse. His thoughts, works, and actions have always been accountable, lawful, and transparent.
For over 50 years, Gülen has led the Hizmet Movement, promoting educational and humanitarian initiatives. He has never been involved in any criminal act. However, both he and his followers have been unfairly targeted, profiled, and deprived of their freedoms by “centers abusing state power” under the guise of his lawful activities related to freedom of expression, religion, and assembly.
He has faced oppression in every era. The most severe pressures occurred during the March 12, September 12, February 28, and July 15 events, where teachers, businesspeople, academics, journalists, and even housewives were persecuted simply for their association with Gülen, without any concrete evidence of criminal activity.
His books and speeches have been used as grounds for the accusations against him. Certain quotes were selectively taken out of context, creating a false narrative and prejudiced interpretation. This method fabricated crimes where none existed, showcasing a fictional narrative rather than reality. Such forced interpretations could potentially frame crimes even from legal and divine texts.
When examined in detail, Gülen’s actual intent in his writings and speeches becomes clear:
- To promote the moral teachings of his Islamic faith and encourage their acceptance by wider audiences.
- To advocate for peace and reconciliation, avoiding conflict and violence.
- To respect and uphold the truths revealed by science.
- To foster brotherhood, peace, and tolerance for all of humanity.
In all his actions, Gülen emphasized the importance of staying within legal boundaries. He never promoted the idea of seizing state institutions, but rather called for the democratic improvement of existing systems. He championed the idea of strengthening democracy, not undermining it.
While no one is obligated to agree with Hocaefendi’s ideas, it is unjust to accuse him and label him an enemy simply because his views differ from one’s own.
In time, the truth will emerge.
Due to factors such as ideological differences, group affiliations, and media manipulation, baseless and unfounded accusations have been used to depict Hocaefendi as guilty. We will continue to defend justice and truth against these false allegations and will fight to end the injustices faced by Gülen and his followers.
Despite the slander, pressure, and distortion, we remain steadfast in our defense of the truth. When justice is finally served, Gülen’s unwavering commitment to humanity and peace will be remembered with even greater respect and admiration.
