Why is Justin Trudeau resigning as Canada’s Prime Minister?

After nearly a decade in power, Justin Trudeau has announced his intention to step down as Canada’s Prime Minister.

At 53, Trudeau ascended to the role in November 2015, riding a wave of hope and promises of revitalization. However, in recent months, he has faced mounting pressure to resign.

Why the Pressure to Step Down?
Once regarded as a global progressive leader, Trudeau’s approval ratings plunged to a record low of 33% late last year. A poll conducted at the time revealed widespread frustration with Canada’s economic struggles, including high inflation and rising food prices. The country’s housing crisis, where house prices have surged by 30-40% in some areas, has fueled resentment toward his government.

Political scandals throughout his tenure have also taken a toll. Trudeau was criticized in 2017 for accepting gifts such as holidays and private helicopter rides. His decision to skip Canada’s first National Day of Truth and Reconciliation for a surfing vacation, along with revelations that his family received hundreds of thousands of dollars from a charity linked to a government contract, further damaged his public image.

Why Now?
Although federal law mandates an election by October 2025, Trudeau’s Liberal Party members have been weighing whether it’s time for a change in leadership. In late 2023, nearly two dozen backbench Liberal MPs urged the Prime Minister to step down or risk a potentially devastating defeat.

The tipping point came in mid-December when his deputy, Chrystia Freeland, publicly criticized him, raising concerns about his ability to handle another term with US President Donald Trump. This prompted Liberal lawmakers from Atlantic Canada, Ontario, and Quebec to call for a new leader.

What Role Does Trump Play?
Trump’s “America First” economic nationalism poses a direct threat to Canada, with tariffs of up to 25% on Canadian goods. Freeland, who has previously warned about the gravity of the situation, has expressed concerns about Trudeau’s ability to navigate the challenges with Trump.

Freeland’s criticism of Trudeau might also be a strategic move in her potential bid for the Liberal leadership. She has long been considered a potential successor to Trudeau.

What’s Next?
Liberal lawmakers are scheduled to meet to discuss Trudeau’s future, though his announcement on Monday that he plans to step down preempted that discussion. Trudeau also declared that parliament would be suspended until March 24, providing his party with time to select a new leader.

When Will the Election Take Place?
Although the federal election must be held by October 2025, opposition parties have expressed a lack of confidence in the current government, meaning the election could be called sooner. Current polling suggests that the Conservative Party is poised to secure a majority, but the outcome could shift significantly depending on the leadership choices within the Liberal Party.
